Serving others

With Sherry Wollenberg I am facilitating a Lenten Journey using a small book of meditations provided by Episcopal Relief and Development. The meditations for the week March 27-April 2 led us into a discussion about “works” and about practicing our faith.

In a short email to participants I reminded them and remind you now that in the Letter of James we are exhorted to “be doers of the word, and not merely hearers.” (James 1:22) Later we are directly confronted by the Apostle: “just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead.” (James 2:26)

I have found great joy in serving others in the name of Christ, of being served in the name of Christ (in my illness I received so much from others), and of serving with others in the name of Christ. In this Lenten season may you find the strength and the heart to serve others in the name of Christ, who came to serve….

For further consideration

  • In the Service of Life – an essay by Rachel Naomi Remen about serving; it is not a specifically Christian viewpoint but when read through the eyes of one longing to serve as Christ served the reader will find a wealth of encouragement, instruction, and inspiration.
  • The Baptismal Covenant – a covenant made and regularly renewed by us Episcopalians
